A Warm Modern Kitchen in Plainfield, Massachusetts

This charming kitchen in Plainfield, MA beautifully blends the spirit of the home’s early 1900s architecture with the clean, timeless look of mid century modern wood kitchen cabinets. Originally built over a century ago and thoughtfully renovated in the 1950s, the house underwent a full kitchen transformation last year — and the result feels as though it’s always belonged.

At the heart of the space is a welcoming island with seating and a solid butcher block countertop — perfect for everyday meals and gathering with friends. The surrounding cabinetry features classic soapstone counters, while open shelving finished in our signature Sweet Potato wood wax adds warmth and a cheerful pop of color.

A full-height open pantry keeps spices and dried goods close at hand, complemented by plenty of cookbook and display storage throughout. The details bring personality and balance: a mix of green Schoolhouse green ceramic knobs and black metal pulls bridge the home’s vintage character with its newly modernized feel.

We also integrated a dedicated baker’s-height counter and sliding-door cabinets — subtle nods to the home’s layered history and the clients’ love for function-driven design. Despite the rest of the house retaining its antique charm, the kitchen’s natural materials and handcrafted details make this modern addition feel perfectly at home.

Every element — from the mid century modern wood kitchen cabinets to the curated hardware — tells a story of warmth, craft, and continuity.
