A Nordic MCM Kitchen in the Berkshires

Set in the rolling hills of Becket, Massachusetts, this light-filled renovation pairs the warmth of New England craftsmanship with the simplicity of Scandinavian design. The home — a Nordic-style cabin surrounded by trees — needed a kitchen that felt both inviting and refined. The result is a nordic midcentury kitchen filled with natural textures, cheerful color, and thoughtful detail.

We built the cabinetry from maple plywood and finished it with clear and color wood waxes that highlight its subtle grain and exposed edges. The natural finish adds warmth and honesty to the space. Meanwhile, a wall of Indigo-stained cabinets anchors the room and connects to the panel-ready refrigerator and hidden broom closet. When the tall blue doors slide open, they reveal a burst of red laminate — a vibrant contrast that brightens daily routines. Inside these mid century modern wood kitchen cabinets, the pantry, coffee station, and small appliances stay organized and out of sight.

Every handcrafted detail ties the design together. The clients sourced a set of vintage red ceramic pulls, and we hand-painted oak appliance handles in-house to match them. Push-to-open island drawers, custom perforated toe kicks, and a soapstone countertop create a mix of function and ease. Each material works together to balance warmth and modern simplicity.

Together with architect Rachel Keenan Roberts, we designed a spacious, open layout that lets a large, multi-generational family cook and gather at the same time. Wide-plank floors, a wood-clad ceiling, and clean black fixtures echo the surrounding forest. Natural light fills the space and softens every surface, bringing out the beauty of the materials.

This kitchen captures the spirit of Scandinavian kitchen design — modern, warm, and deeply personal. It celebrates color, craftsmanship, and the way thoughtful design can bring family together.
