Modern Warmth in a Compact Footprint: A Modern Black Kitchen for an Amherst ADU

Designing for a small space doesn’t mean giving up style or quality. This modern black kitchen, part of a new accessory dwelling unit in Amherst, Massachusetts, shows how thoughtful layout and hands-on craftsmanship can make a space feel grounded and elevated. Architect Maria Chao led the design, and Integrity Development & Construction brought the structure to life with care.

A Layout That Celebrates Light

Thanks to high ceilings and clerestory windows, this kitchen is full of natural light. The daylight shifts throughout the day, adding warmth and movement to the space. Even with a compact footprint, the kitchen feels open and welcoming.

Bold Cabinetry, Thoughtful Contrast

Cabinetry takes center stage in this design. We created inset-style cabinets with black-stained plywood doors that highlight the natural birch wood grain. These bold fronts contrast beautifully with the soft, white-washed maple island. The combination adds depth, warmth, and a modern sensibility.

We also finished all the ceiling and wall panels in-house at our workshop. That allowed us to match the tone and texture of the cabinetry exactly. This detail blurs the line between furniture and architecture—a nod to both mid century modern cabinetry and post-and-beam kitchen design.

Designed to Work and Live Well

While it’s visually striking, this kitchen also functions smoothly. The maple island includes open shelving, integrated trash and recycling storage, and comfortable bar seating. A black concrete countertop adds contrast without feeling heavy. Altogether, the design keeps the focus on materiality, not clutter.
